72Hours.org / Honorable Mention: Community

Recognizing that fear-based messaging inspires panic, paralysis, mistrust and fatigue, San Francisco bucked the national trend and developed a plain-spoken information-set and upbeat advertising campaign to encourage citizens to plan and prepare for potential disasters. Despite it’s simplistic design—pure HTML and static positioning—the website received hundreds of thousands of hits. It was awarded a 2006 International Webby Award for best governmental website. A beta project, 72Hours.org/anywhere, in development. It will enable cities and counties around the country to customize and post a preparedness site free of charge. Advertising templates will also be offered at no cost. words pictures ideas + 72 Hours + SF Department of Emergency Management
